VeneKlasen/Werner is pleased to announce the second movement of SYMPHONY, a performance series in six movements, organized in collaboration with Soundfair. SYMPHONY will be presented in the gallery September 2010 to June 2011.
Musicians, composers, and visual artists were invited to make works that expand on the traditional concepts of concert and exhibition, and to present these works as unique events, or 'movements', in the gallery. Exploring new strategies and situations in performance, each movement of SYMPHONY plays with - or against - an idea of conversion: each musician is confronted with a new staging, which does not resemble a typical concert; likewise, each artist risks a step into the musical world, disregarding the notion that artworks exist as purely visual strategies.
Movement II of this series is by Olaf Nicolai and is entitled (Innere Stimme) (inner voice). It is based on a notation of the piece “Humoreske,” Opus 20 for piano, by Robert Schumann. On one page of the piece Schumann included a third notation between the treble and bass staves which he named “Innere Stimme.” This melody can technically not be played by the pianist as his hands are tied by the treble and bass staves, but the melody remains present for the musician – it influences his interpretation of the piece. The audience, who cannot see the notation, can only imagine the innere Stimme.
For the performance at the gallery, this imagined and inaudible sound is interpreted by a number of singers who perform the melody over a period of 30 hours without intermission.

Olaf Nicolai studied in Leipzig, Vienna and Budapest and received a PhD in 1992. His works have been awarded among others with the Art Award of the City of Wolfsburg (Kunstpreis der Stadt Wolfsburg) as well as Scholarships of Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, IASPIS, and PS1. His numerous international solo exhibitions include, among others: Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover, Casino Luxembourg, Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zürich, Watari-Um Museum Tokyo. He lives and works in Berlin.

Additional movements of SYMPHONY will be presented over the next months and include works by Annika Eriksson, Bo Christian Larsson, Ari Benjamin Meyers and Anri Sala.

VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) freut sich, den zweiten Satz von SYMPHONY anzukündigen. Die Performancereihe in sechs Sätzen wird in Zusammenarbeit mit Soundfair organisiert und findet zwischen den regulären Ausstellungen bis Juni 2011 in der Galerie statt.

Musiker, Komponisten und bildende Künstler wurden gebeten, Arbeiten zu schaffen, die das traditionelle Konzert- und Ausstellungskonzept erweitern, und diese Werke als separate Performances oder „Sätze“ in der Galerie vorzustellen. Jeder Satz von SYMPHONY erforscht neue Strategien und Situationen von Aufführungen und spielt mit der Idee einer Neugestaltung: jeder Musiker ist mit einer neuen Umgebung konfrontiert, die in einer typischen Konzertsituation nicht zu finden ist. Gleichzeitig wagen sich Bildende Künstler in die Welt der Musik vor und verzichten weitgehend auf visuelle Strategien.

Olaf Nicolais 30 Stunden Performance (Innere Stimme) baut auf Robert Schumanns Klavierkomposition "Humoreske" auf. Auf einer Seite der Klavierpartitur findet sich zwischen der Notation für beide Hände ein drittes, mittleres Notensystem, welches nicht gespielt werden kann. Diese Melodie ist mit "Innere Stimme" betitelt. Für den Pianisten des Stücks ist diese Stimme in seiner Interpretation präsent, während sie für ein Publikum ungehört und unerkennbar bleibt. Diese imaginierte Melodie wird aus dem Zustand der reinen „Augenmusik“ herausgelöst und über 30 Stunden von Sängern und Sängerinnen interpretiert.
Nicolai studierte Bildende Kunst und Literatur und Philosophie in Leipzig, Budapest und Wien und promovierte 1992. Er wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet unter anderem mit dem Kunstpreis der Stadt Wolfsburg, sowie mit Stipendien der Villa Aurora in Los Angeles, IASPIS und dem PS1. Er stellte unter anderem auf der documenta X und der Biennale Venedig aus. Seine Arbeiten werden weltweit in Institutionen wie dem Migros Museum in Zürich, dem Museum of Modern Art in New York, der Fondation Cartier in Paris und dem Lenbachhaus in München gezeigt. Nicolai lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

SYMPHONY ist die erste Kooperation zwischen VW (VeneKlasen/Werner) und Soundfair, einem Berliner Ausstellungskollektiv, das sich zum Ziel gesetzt hat, Musik im Kunstkontext auszustellen.
